Review: Wolverine, PATCH Issue #1

May 21, 2022

Hi there and welcome back to Coffee, Cannabis and Comics. If you missed my last post about my first comic book experience you can check it out here. Before we begin, let me give an overview of how I will be reviewing each comic issue, starting with Wolverine PATCH, issue #1.

My plan is to do a short snippet of the following:

  • Cover Art

  • Story

  • Overall Rating 5 star rating system from Comic Geeks App

Now let’s get started on this comic book review. I picked this issue up because since growing up with Hugh Jackman playing an awesome Wolverine, I wanted to experience something different. Almost like the last movie Hugh Jackman did Logan. I also visited my local dispensary on the same day and picked up some concentrates to enjoy while reading my comics. For this issue I smoked Slurricane by Billo, it was nice indica that helped me relax and appreciate the art on each page of this comic.

Cover At first glance this cover piqued my interest because Wolverine is in a suit. Then I noticed he was wearing a patch and that the issue was called PATCH. Other than Wolverine I didn’t know anyone else on the cover; but that didn’t really bother me. I was more interested in Wolverine and this other side of him. I did a quick flip through the pages and decided to add it to my basket. The art style does a great job showing character emotions, action and is easy to follow along.

Shield Dossier page in Wolverine Patch

The SHIELD Dossier was a great little overview before reading.

Story What I thought was pretty freakin cool was the S.H.I.E.L.D. Dossier that is included in the very beginning of the comic. It gave me a quick overview:

Wolverine is currently living incognito under the alias Patch in Madripoor(I thought this was a real city, but it is in fact a fictional island located in maritime Southeast Asia according to marvelfandom) His base of operations is at the Princess Bar that he co-owns with Tyger Tiger and remains a powerful ally but because he sometimes goes off on his own, S.H.I.E.L.D. has him on their radar.

Seems like everyone is wearing a patch these days.

It opens up with Patch chillin in the Princess Bar and being approached for a job to handle out in the mountain reserves. Patch isn't even remotely interested but upon hearing of CHA-CHING, he decides to check it out. So he heads out with his partner Archie Corrigan and proceeds to make me fall out of my chair laughing. Why? Well to stay out of  S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar and to avoid Nicholas Fury, Patch just jumps out of the f***ing plane and crash lands in the forest and cracks all his bones back into place. It ended up being my favorite panel in the entire book.

This whole spread was awesome. Love how the sound effects are overlayed the image.

As he’s walking and wondering why he hasn’t come near the site yet he gets jumped. Beth and Gimel who I don’t know if they are mutants or enhancements. Turns out they are both, they beat the crap out of Patch and leave him for dead. Now while all of this is going on, Archie and Tyger think there is something else going on with someone named General Coy in the area where Patch just went. It ends with Patch regenerating and following the trail of blood left behind by the two who jumped him.

Overall Rating on Comic Geeks I gave this issue a 5 out of 5 stars. I was informed right in the beginning of what was going on, who was involved and then thrusted into action. The art was compelling and the writing was easy to digest as well. Be sure to look out for my review of Wolverine Patch issue #2.

My First Comic Book Purchase Plus Free Comic Book Day

May 19, 2022

Nothing like getting your first comics in your 30's. Diving into this wonderful creative world and not looking back. I’m a graphic designer in the cannabis industry looking to disconnect from the digital world by reading comics. I hope you enjoy my first post, thank you for checking it out!

It seems like getting into comics was meant to be for me this year. About a month ago I had reached out to a friend of mine about how I would love to get into comics but I have no idea where to start. He said something like ‘just dive right in. Start with something you know, characters you like and then also just browse and take your time.’ Fast forward to Free Comic Book Day on May 8 and I finally entered a comic book store for the first time.

I have been wanting to go to this store for a bit now; I am a fan of Funko Pops but I always just order them online or pick them up at Gamestop. So when my buddy reached back out and said “go pick up your free comic book and get started,” I wasted no time to check it out. The store is called I Want More Comics and I was like a kid in a candy store. I approached the door and saw a big wall of comics on display outside and two employees. I was handed a piece of paper and told to write down the Top 3 comics I wanted and then 2 back ups in case they didn’t have them.

Free Comic Book Day: Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Special Edition 2022, Spider-Man / Venom #1, The-Boys Herogasm

I opted for:

Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Special Edition 2022

I thought it did a good job summarizing what has happened and what is going to happen without the feeling of being overwhelmed. When I first picked this up and read thru it, I didn’t even realize it was a #0 issue and the #1 issue has yet to come out. Luckily the Comic Geeks community helped me out with understanding what I was actually reading.

The Boys-Herogasm

Big fan of the Amazon show and fully expected this issue to be full of the same craziness. Sure enough it was. Couple chuckles, fun little read, glad I picked it up. I’ve also heard rumors that Herogasm will feature in the 3rd season of The Boys on Amazon.

Free Comic Book Day 2020: Spider-Man / Venom #1

Behold my first Spider-Man issue. This was an ok read, I wasn’t really sure who or what was going on. Ultimately I opted for a different Spider-Man series when I went back for my first purchase.

Now the Venom #1 preview was really badass, awesome action packed panels with some really nice full page shots. Because I'm new to the comic world, I'm not really sure if this is a series that is already ongoing because at the end it says continued in Venom #26. But I thought it was the beginning of #1. After posting about this on Comic Geeks, I was told this run ended last year, SO I might have to go pick this one up at some point.

The colors were dope but the story wasn’t compelling enough for me to garner further interest

I went home and read them right away. I burned thru them so quickly that I was itching to go back to the store and start my actual comic journey and select some issues to start reading. Three days later, I went back and made my first purchases.

Wolverine: Patch Issue #1

X-Men ‘92 House of XCII Issue #1

MEZO Issue 1 (Didn’t realize this was Volume 2)

RAIN Issue #1

Saga Volume 1

Ben Reilly Spider-Man Issues #1-3

Three comics fanned out on a table, Rain, Saga and MEZO

I wanted to pick familiar comics and unfamiliar. Saga and RAIN have me HOOKED!

Following that purchase, I spoke to the person at the counter of my local comic shop of when new issues come out. I wasn’t aware that certain ones come out on certain days, etc. So I went back the next day and was able to pick up issue #4 of Ben Reilly Spider-Man. But the most exciting part of it was picking up Jurassic League Issue #1.

Be sure to check back next week as I review a couple of these issues. First one up will be Wolverine: Patch Issue #1. See you next time!
