Podcast Review: Batman Unburied

May 28, 2022

Randomly searching for Comic podcasts on Spotify I came upon Batman Unburied. After becoming a big fan of Only Murders in the Building on Hulu based on crime podcasts, I wanted to check it out and see what all the commotion was about. Interested too?

Listen to the trailer for Batman Unburied below.

From Spotify:
A serial killer terrorizes Gotham City, but Batman is not coming to the rescue. In fact, Bruce Wayne has no memory of being the Caped Crusader at all. To find out why, Barbara Gordon seeks help from Gotham's second smartest detective: The Riddler.

Episode 1

Batman Unburied begins with Bruce Wayne as a Forensic Pathologist performing an autopsy on a suspected The Harvester killing. We find out that Bruce has a special way of connecting with the victims on his slab table while he cuts them open. He envisions himself as the victim to try and figure out what happened. All of this within the first 3 minutes. It got me hooked.

Want to follow along? Below is a link to Episode 1.

Episode 1, Kind of a Night Person

Whoa. Not what I expected for more than just 1 reason.

  1. Holy shit, Bruce’s parents are alive??

  2. Bruce Wayne is a doctor?

  3. Bruce goes to therapy?!

Maybe because I never listen to podcasts that this is so different to me. But it was exciting, interesting and more importantly not difficult to follow along.

While Bruce is performing the autopsy, he determines that maybe The Harvester wasn’t finished with this victim. Sure enough, he was right, The Harvester shows up and incapacitates Bruce. He cuts her up, eats some of her body and places some brain on her tongue. Extremely fucked up and gave me chills.

Bruce’s body is found by some other workers and they save him. He goes into surgery performed by his father, Thomas Wayne. Which again, very crazy that his parents are alive. After surgery his father tells him that he MUST go to therapy, for he deals with way too many bodies and thinks it is affecting him. Spoiler alert, it is.

Bruce goes to his first therapy session and reveals that his dad sees him as a failure and some other minor things. The therapist wants more but it’s hard to pry it out of Bruce.

Next Bruce heads out to see Robert(The Riddler?) I only say this because of the episode description. Tells him that he wants to get The Harvester and tries to get some photos from him but is unsuccessful. He heads home and is met by his mom. She pours him a drink and they chat a bit. Something odd happens, I thought I heard a gunshot and Marta spills her drink. She heads to get paper towel to clean up; then something weird happens, Marta’s necklace somehow breaks and the pearls go everywhere, but during that time it causes Bruce to have a weird migraine or something.

He receives a phone call from The Harvester, he tells Bruce “I’ve got your recorder” and to check out the fridge….

I have to say, I’m hooked. Going to continue listening to this series. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Well with the name including a year (‘92) I think this is a portal in the background. Awesome to see Magneto working together with X-Men.

Review: X-Men Class of '92 House of XCII

May 27, 2022

Behold, the first X-Men comic on Coffee, Cannabis and Comics. This is one of the issues I picked up when I first went to my local comic book shop and with issue #2 coming out shortly I felt it was a good one to do next. For this one I smoked Sugaree Mama from my local shop, Callie’s Shoppe while reading and while writing this post. A reminder I will be reviewing the following:

  • Cover Art

  • Story

  • Overall Rating 5 star rating system from Comic Geeks App

At the beginning when I was trying to figure out what comics I wanted to read or start reading, I had in the back of my mind to find a X-Men comic. Part of it has to do with the version of Wolverine that is featured in this run. So leading into the cover, here are the main things that stood out to me and got me to pick it up off the shelf.

Cover On the cover of this issue we have Professor X/Charles Xavier in the front of the group. Behind Professor X we then have Cyclop/Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Magneto/Erik Lensherr and Wolverine/Logan. It was pretty dope to see them all on the front together. I wish the hover wheelchair that Professor X looked a bit cooler but his Cerebro mask looks dope(at least I think it’s his cerebro mask)

But what REALLY drew me in was the way Wolverine was illustrated. I absolutely love this version of him with his yellow spandex costume and huge winged mask. Reminds me of the cartoons from awhile back.

I’m really digging this punk ruck neon color intro page.

Story We are brought right into the action in the first page of the comic with the X-Men fighting the Sentinels(pretty much mutant hunting robots) Storm, Jean, Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit and Rogue are all kicking ass but also trying to not blast the walls because they are actually out in space! WTF! As we see in the spread below, Trask is mad at himself for renouncing his campaign against the mutants. But Wolverine seems to be hell bent on revenge. But we don’t know why and who they are grieving about. All of the sudden, Gambit throws his whole deck and blows a hole in the station. We don’t know who’s dead but Jean said she can’t sense Rogue, Beast or Gambit anymore. Right then, Cyclops/Scott is obliterated by a Sentinel.

Spread of X-men comic book

Wolverine is so badass!! Man I love this illustration and seeing him go ham!

Trask is found by Wolverine and Wolverine talks too much shit that it allows time for Trask to send his data to another research facility. Jean can sense Trask’s relief and realizes they are too late. Rogue tells Jean to “Call him, Jean. Tell him the mission is in his hands now” but we don’t know who “him” is. The next panel we see Magneto destroying the station after saying “You have my word, Ms. Grey. Magneto shall end this.

wolverine in X-Men house of '92

I thought this illustration was great to show the power that Wolverine possess.

Meanwhile we are brought to Earth and end up at the Krakoan Embassy, New York City. Psylocke is giving a tour to someone and they are talking about if the X-Men are gone who will defend the people rush their doors. Psylocke sends a telepathic message to Cable asking for help. Cable sends three of their finest and they fight the angry group of people outside. As they are walking ,there is a huge explosion in the sky and they wonder if the X-Men were successful in destroying the newest Sentinel program.

The next spread shows Professor X with the group and Magneto. They talk about completing the mission and then that the Resurrection Protocols worked all thanks to The Five. Wolverine is pissed as someone died but was not brought back. They let him go grieve in his own way. We then get an explainer about Krakoa and that its a refuge for all mutants.

Then at the end we find out who was killed and not brought back, Jubilee. They didn’t know how to back up mutant minds using cerebro when she was killed; but we also find out that it was her death that united them all so she needed to be kept hidden/thought to be dead.

Jubilee spread in X-men house of '92

At the very end of Issue 1 we see Jubilee, has she been hiding this whole time??

Turns out that she was able to escape death at the last second but if she dies now, everything will reset. She then says that they needed to make sure the Orchis Protocols don’t come online, cause if they do everything will end. We then see Wolverine sniffing the cave and thinking it’s possibly Jubilee.

Overall Rating I give this a 4/5. The action, the illustration and the colors were all so good. It was a thrill to go through each page but I found myself having to Google quite a few things because I didn’t know back story on it all.

issue 2 of PATCH with wax concentrate

The cover for PATCH issue #2 is pretty badass

Review: Wolverine, PATCH Issue #2

May 27, 2022

Welcome back to Coffee, Cannabis and Comics. If you missed the review of PATCH issue #1 you can check it out here. A reminder I will be reviewing the following:

  • Cover Art

  • Story

  • Overall Rating 5 star rating system from Comic Geeks App

I’ve gotten to experience the excitement of going to the comic book shop to pick up the next issue only to be disappointed when it’s not there. That was fun, for all of 5 seconds. After walking around for a bit and trying not to get interested in another series, I headed out for another shop in downtown Denver called Mile High Comics. It was freaking huge and slightly overwhelming at first. But once I walked around the entire place and figured out where things were it was a bit easier to digest. Eventually after about 15 minutes or so, I found issue #2 of PATCH. Stopped at my local dispensary as well and for this issue I smoked some Ice Box Pie from Billo and that is where we begin…

Cover Now this cover is completely opposite of issue #1. The cover on issue #1 was primarily dark/black featuring PATCH/Wolverine in a suit, giving me major 007 vibes. On issue #2 we see him with his clothes shredded, his hair disheveled and his claws fully out engaged in a fight with Beth in front of a sunrise(sunset?) background. Beth is also featured on the cover of the first issue, but only her head is visible. She and her brother are mutants with enhancements, just like PATCH. Also one thing to note, the #1 issue I own of PATCH is a second printing.

opening spread of issue 2 of PATCH comic book with coffee, cannabis and comics logo in white

Looks like we’ll be getting these S.H.I.E.L.D. dossier’s with each issue, great way to recap the previous issue.

Story Love that they did a S.H.I.E.L.D. Dossier again as the opening spread. It gave me a quick overview of issue 1:

At the end of issue 1 PATCH encounters Beth and her brother Gimel, enhanced Russian mutants, that proceed to beat the shit out of PATCH. Leaving him for dead, or so they thought. He gets back up and follows the trail of blood left behind by Beth. Issue 2 opens up with PATCH searching through the wooded area for the two that attacked him, then he notices the SHIELD Helicarrier still up in the area above the area he’s investigating. On the Helicarrier, a soldier mentions something about the mutants not showing up on radar anymore and vanishing.

Comic book spread of issue 2 of PATCH

The text “wip wip wip” is so well placed and written that I can imagine this entire scene perfectly

PATCH is getting attacked once again but by a tribe native to the land, meanwhile a KGB agent Major Tatiana Nemikova shows up to meet with the Prince. The man who hired PATCH in the first place.

It seems like everyone is spying on everyone at this point. Because S.H.I.E.L.D. is spying on the land overhead, Archie and Tyger are also flying around spying on General Coy, who seems to be up to something in the area that PATCH is investigating. Anyways something is going on, the natives of the land are scared of everyone but also investigating why the monkeys of the forest are being kidnapped.

action spread in comic PATCH issue 2

This panel was freaking crazyyyy

Things seem to be all over the place. General Coy and his men happen upon PATCH and the natives but after realizing they are not enemies they seem to be working with each other now. A gun fight ensues, natives are shot down as their bow and arrows prove no match for the guns the army had. BUT THEN PATCH gets back up and starts slicing and dicing the group of soldiers. We are blessed with this badass panel of PATCH’S claws uppercutting a soldier. Again I love how the text is treated across these big action panels.

PATCH and the surviving natives end up reaching a cave and out comes the Russian enhanced mutants. As they take care and help PATCH regenerate, a new character appears. Jean!

Last page of comic PATCH issue 2 of Jean

Overall Rating I give this a 4/5. There was a bunch of action and awesome panels but I was lost for a second with the different groups. It took me reading a couple times to understand who was all in play.

Thor: Love and Thunder Movie Trailer was released Monday, May 23 2022

Trailer Review/Thor: Love and Thunder

May 24, 2022

Behold! We got a trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder. Time to take a dab and watch this! I’m so excited to see this one and am anxious for its release, also I love Christian Bale. I’m going to be finishing up my Slurricane (indica) from my local dispensary Shoppe Callies!

View trailer and dope poster for Thor: Love and Thunder below.

TRAILER REACTION!

The Space Viking Thor Odinson(Chris Hemsworth)!! Oh wow, I am PUMPED for this one. “From dad bod to god bod,” haha absolutely love that, that needs to be on a shirt.

Well since I am new to comics, I’m unsure if we already know how Jane Foster(Natalie Portman) got her powers or if we are going to find out something new in this movie. What it does make me want to do is a bit of research and possibly read some Thor comics before the movie releases.

Gorr the God Butcher is played by Christian Bale, making his MCU debut. I’m pretty pumped about this one; I’ve seen some chatter about the design of Gorr being too humanistic but I think this might be done because of an actor’s likeness and showing their actual face rather than CGI. That’s just my 2 cents.

We also get to see Zeus, played by Russel Crowe in a hilarious “flick” clip at the very end of the trailer. We’ll see if he plays a bigger role in this movie. Glad to see some returning faces, especially Korg as he is one of my favorite. Can’t wait for it to come out!

The poster looks really badass and I have to say I’m a big fan of the the styling of Thor. Anyways I feel like this is on par with the recent Dr. Strange posters that were also awesome.

Thanks for tagging along, let me know if you’re excited for this movie in the comments! Also if you have any comic recommendations to give me background that would be great. See you next time!

On the left the original Jurassic League Cover, on the right variant cover by Juan Gedeon

Review: Jurassic League Issue #1

May 22, 2022

Something I wanted to share with you all today, my first variant cover purchase!

What is a variant cover? Well from my understanding some comic books will publish multiple cover designs of a comic book issue. But with the help of a quick google search, according to the internet a variant cover refers to an issue of a comic book printed with multiple covers, each with unique cover art.

Jurassic League Variant Cover B Juan Gedeon Card Stock

I picked up Jurassic League when I went to my local shop to make my first purchases. I thought it was fun and interesting with dinosaurs on the cover in superhero outfits. I figured it would at least be something to read to my son Oliver. Now here is something that threw me off, my son was very careful handling the book and was checking out each page intently. It was such a wonderful dad moment to experience. We had fun reading this one.

So then to have a bit more fun, I figured why not go back to the comic book shop but this time bring Oliver along! I knew the variant cover would draw him in. ANYTHING dinosaurs is this kids jam, he goes gaga over them. Sure enough we walk into the shop and I bring him over to the comic book rack. He sees the cover and grabs it right away!

Original Cover At first glance the cover was intense and caused me to pick it up and check out the details. From what I could tell, it was going to be about superheroes as dinosaurs. The cover features a Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman dinosaur. They all look pretty sweet in their various stances and I really like how the “Superman” covers up the title slightly.

Variant Cover by Juan Gedeon WOW. Absolutely love this cover. I’m a huge fan of negative/white space in my own graphic design work, but to see it on a comic book cover with such epic illustration was great. Also pretty stoked that this is printed on cardstock.

Variant Cover + an inside spread

Story Now as we may already know this story, having it depicted with dinosaurs made it fun to read. Our Batman dino begins the story with hunting down a certain monster that is threatening the lands. He comes upon… Jokerzard. LOL. He comes to realize that this Jokerzard is the one responsible for killing its parents and whoops his ass. All while a little boy is mourning his parents that were seemingly killed by Jokerzard. We later are introduced to Blackmantasaurus, Wonderdon and Supersaur PLUS two more at the very end. My son and I are very excited to read issue #2 and can’t wait to pick it up. I’m even more excited to take my son to the comic book store again.

Picked up some Strawberry Tree wax from my local dispensary to smoke while reading this comic

Overall Rating on Comic Geeks I gave this issue a 5 out of 5. The art drew me in and my son enjoying it too has caused me to add it to my pull list (which is another word for wishlist) This was another great issue to start off with since it is one that many of us have already heard.

Be sure to check back next week as I review a few more of the comics i purchased on my first trip to the comic book shop!
